a guitar with ten strings

The guitar with six strings is much more beautiful than it ,at least ,they are jimpness ,but i saw a guy play it easily,oh ,no ~I just wonder what is the function of the other four strings?Just a guitar with extra bass strings ?! May be in a band ,if one person play a guitar with ten strings ,then ,they don't need a bassist!
oh ,what is your opinion ? Do you ever play a guitar with ten strings?
